Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 was one of those glorious days we take for granted, a premature taste of summer, too good to waste. Jeanne and I went to San Clemente where we made a wonderful discovery. A monument has been erected to the Marines of the 1st Division. Their home at Camp Pendleton lies just south of San Clemente.

At the foot of this statue I found a weather-beaten binder containing a hand-written tribute to a young corporal of Marines, fallen in Iraq. I couldn't bear the thought of this little memorial growing ever more battered and eventually being tossed out like so much trash.
At right can be seen the cover of this binder. It's not clear who left the tribute but it states this:
To Corporal Jason Morrow of India Co, 3/5 (3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment) Wpns Plt (Weapons Platoon) KILLED IN ACTION 3rd Combat Tour Al Anbar Province Iraq
Click on the insignia below to read the text of that tribute.
