The Origins of Dogs About Town
|
|
It was in January of 2000 that the familiar Dogs About Town van with its distinctive beagle-in-flight logo, was first seen patrolling the streets of Huntington Beach.

I had been working in a temporary position as a heavy driver for Southern California Edison for the better part of a year and when that position had run its course I was ready for something new. I had spent twenty five years driving trucks, most of that time spent with Sav-on Drugs and Lucky Stores.

While I had managed to compile an exemplary record for safety and reliability over the years, I longed to be my own boss, to do work I really loved. Who in their right mind wouldn't rather play with dogs all day than hump freight?

My wife, Jeanne suggested that I ride along with Julie Mayr, the legendary doggie maven of Long Beach as she went about her rounds, taking groups of dogs to the dog park. I saw right away this was work that appealed to me. The dogs seemed to like me and I wasn’t a bit squeamish about picking up poop or ending up covered with dog spit by the end of the day.
The rest is history.
